Opposites are all around us – in our personalities, physical appearances, and even within architectural spaces. Artists such as Fred Wilson, Méret Oppenheim, and Daniel Chester French [the architect behind the Brooklyn Museum] encourage us to stop and think about what we are seeing and why we are seeing it. Children will think back to places they have seen around NYC that represent the idea of “opposite” in either color, materials, or function. They’ll consider how opposites can actually support each other in art and combine different materials to create their own architectural structures.
